davis & drew

welcome to the carolina family, ed davis. a projection of mins. in his freshman year if everyone returns:

lawson: 26
frasor: 19
drew: 6
ellington: 22
ginyard: 21
green: 20
graves: 6
hansbrough: 28
thompson: 23
stepheson: 17
copeland: 4
davis: 8

if hansbrough decides to forego his senior season, the big men mins. should look like:

thompson: 29
stepheson: 26
copeland: 9
davis:16

if lawson leaves before his junior campaign, the 1-3 positions will look like:

frasor: 25
drew: 10
ellington: 27
ginyard: 25
green: 25
graves: 8

oh boy! and we're still recruiting tyler zeller and iman shumpert. the only caveat there is that there won't be room for both if both hansbrough and lawson stay in school.

i don't know who i'd rather have. you can always get shooters like shumpert if you're the kind of top-notch program that Carolina is, plus, he'd be sitting behind ellington. however, carolina big men traditionally play right under the basket, and that isn't zeller's game. so i don't know.

carolina recruiting: don't panic yet

Much has been made of the fact that Carolina got 0 guys in the class of 2007 and is losing out on big prospects left and right in the class of 2008. Samardo Samuels, Delvon Roe, Al-Farouq Aminu, and Jrue Holiday are just four of the big names the Heels were in good position with this year and lost out on. But is 2008 really the class that UNC needs? Let's check out the roster.

William Graves--rFr.
Tywon Lawson--So.
Wayne Ellington--So.
Deon Thompson--So.
Alex Stepheson--So.
Tyler Hansbrough--Jr.
Danny Green--Jr.
Marcus Ginyard--Jr.
Bobby Frasor--Jr.
Mike Copeland--Jr.
Quentin Thomas--Sr.

Let's conservatively say that their rotation is 8 deep now, which is plenty deep. It's not last year, with the 11-man rotation, but it's still fine. So, Carolina doesn't truly NEED anyone in the class of 2007 to step in and play (and that's why they were only really seriously recruiting Kevin Love).
But what about the next year? Don't the Heels need someone from the class of 2008? In a word, no. Since we conservatively kept Quentin Thomas out of the 8-man rotation in 2007-08, the Heels don't really lose anybody. And at this point, they are bringing in Larry Drew, a top-flight point guard from that class for sure. Big men Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller are both possibilities as well.
But what about early draft entries? The only guys who look as if they might do that are Lawson and Hansbrough, so even if they do go, they are replaced by Drew and Davis/Zeller, respectively. Additionally, Hansbrough is probably a four-year college player, because he doesn't have a really high ceiling. His arms are short, he is short for a four, he doesn't have a good jump shot, and his athleticism isn't that good. He is a tremendous college player for other reasons, but he isn't a prospect the NBA just falls in love with.
But, being conservative again, let's examine what their 2008-09 roster would check out as if Hansbrough and Lawson both left, AND if Carolina somehow lost out on any big man and any other recruit:
Guard:
Frasor
Drew
Ellington
Small Forward:
Green
Ginyard
Graves
Big Men:
Copeland
Thompson
Stepheson

That roster contains three McDonald's All-Americans, two very good big men (and one good senior backup), and a lot of skill at the 1-3 positions. That roster is 9 deep, which is fine. As you can see, that team isn't hurting for any big names from the class of 2007 or 2008.

But 2009, however, is another matter. That is a critical year for the Heels, as they will lose atleast five players from that graduating class, and the recruiting will really be important. For now, though, the Carolinan community can rest easy. They may have lost out on the Roes and Samuels of the world, but they'll be just fine. After all, this is UNC.

Carolina

Just watched the tape of Wright and Terry getting drafted. Still thinking about minutes next year. Here's how I'd do it:

Tywon Lawson--27 minutes
Bobby Frasor--21 minutes
Quentin Thomas--7 minutes
Wayne Ellington--22 minutes
Marcus Ginyard--21 minutes
Danny Green--22 minutes
William Graves--2 minutes
Mike Copeland--4 minutes
Alex Stepheson--19 minutes
Deon Thompson--25 minutes
Tyler Hansbrough--30 minutes

(200 total minutes)

6:00

I'm really happy that someone from Elon got picked. That basically legitamizes where I'm going to school.

253 is Cincinnati's pick: Chinedum Ndukwe, S from Notre Dame. Can't believe two guys were taken from that atrocious Fightin' Irish secondary.

254 is Oakland with the second to last pick in the draft: Johnathan Holland, WR Louisiana Tech. Never heard of him.

And here is Mr. Irrelevant! They just showed all the parties for Mr. Irrelevant. I'm excited. I hope it's Noland Burchette.

And Detroit takes as Mr. Irrelevant...Ramzee Robinson, CB from Alabama. Mel thinks he'll make the team.

And that's a wrap! Thanks for tuning in. We had a lot of fun! We saw some smart teams, some dumb ones, guys falling, guys rising, surprises, exciting moments, and college stars giving the fans of their new NFL teams hope. I spent 18 hours working on this, and it has been well worth it. See you next year.

5:45

Tampa @ 246: Kenneth Darby, RB from Alabama. I spent Darby's whole career with the Tide wondering when he would turn from a solid, 4 ypc guy to a standout player. It never really happened. This will add depth, and in that sense, it is a good pick. He can come in and be reliable.

New England has 247: Mike Elgin, the C from Iowa. Hadn't heard of him. That was only the seventh pure center taken so far.

The Rams select Keith Jackson, Arkansas' DT at 248. Very good pick. Jackson was productive in college and has some talent. He also has a great name.

249 is also owned by the Rams, and they pick Derek Stanley, WR from Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Giants have 250: Ahmad Bradshaw, RB from Marshall. They add more backfield depth. Bradshaw is a bit of a calculated risk. He started his career at UVA but had some character problems. He is a talent, though.

Jacksonville @ 251: Chad Nkang, LB from Elon!!! Alright! That's my future school! Terrific!

McKnight, Walker, Matt Moore still out there. And Chris Leak.

Andrew Carnahan T from Arizona State is 252 for the Jags.

5:30

San Diego on the clock for 240: Brandon Siler, LB from Florida. Good pick at this stage; he was a key cog in Florida's championship defense last year.

241 is Chicago's: Aaron Brant, the OT from Iowa State.

242 for Indy: Keyunta Dawson, a LB from Texas Tech. A few no-namers these last picks here.

243 for the Pack: Clark Harris, TE from Rutgers. He's pretty good, productive. Not a flashy selection.

244 is my Falcons: Jason Snelling, FB from Virginia.

245 is Tampa's: Marcus Hamilton, CB from UVA. Two Cavs in a row. I really don't think Hamilton is worthy of this pick. He gets destroyed by everyone.

Tennessee is Mel's worst team.

5:15

Cleveland @ 234: Syndric Steptoe, WR Arizona. Great name! Great player? Probably not.

235 for the Jets: Chansi Stuckey, WR from Clemson. He was a good #1 in college. He could make this team. He reminds me of Jerricho Cotchery, the kid from N.C. State that the Jets have.

236 is Philly's: Nate Ilaoa, RB Hawai'i. I really think that there are better backs out there.

Cowboys take Alan Ball, CB Illinois with No. 237

Miami with 238: Abraham Wright, DE Colorado. Don't know him.

Buffalo has 239: C.J. Ah You, DE Oklahoma. Good bit of talent on this kid, but he never quite put it together. Another quality selection from the Bills. They might have impressed me more than any other team these past two days.
